THE RED carpet sizzled in the heat last night as Hollywood's biggest names made their way in to the Golden Globes ceremony in Los Angeles.

Full-length and fabulous were the order of the day with stars favouring the old school glamour of full trains and fishtails over leg-flashing shorter numbers.

The girls couldn't help flashing a little bit of flesh though - with several celebs choosing backless styles or low-cut designs.
EVA LONGORIA pushed temperatures through the roof as she worked the crowd in a stunning black fishtail dress by Zac Posen.
And DAME HELEN MIRREN proved bling is back in fashion with an eye-watering diamond necklace worth over £1million.

Newly single SCARLETT JOHANSSON chose pale peach Elie Saab while NATALIE PORTMAN was showing off her baby bump in a light pink Viktor & Rolf gown with a playful red rose embroidered on it.
And Best Actress nominee NICOLE KIDMAN, who brought hubby KEITH URBAN along for the ride, was on trend with a white, asymmetric, floor-length number.

Mad Men's lady in red CHRISTINA HENDRICKS worked those famous curves in a figure-hugging scarlet gown with a flattering shoulder rosette.
Best Supporting Actress nominee AMY ADAMS was a fishtale fantasy in a stunning strapless blue gown.

A surprisingly demure JENNIFER LOPEZ and slightly raunchier CHRISTINA AGUILERA chose the same designer, Zuhair Murad, for their respective white and black dresses.
MEGAN FOX also surprised, ditching her trademark bold colours and cuts for an ultra feminine pink, floor-length gown by Armani Prive.
Also in Armani Prive, Best Actress nominee ANNE HATHAWAY may not have won her gong at the glittering ceremony but she won high praise instead for this daring backless dress embroidered with Swarovski crystals.

Eccentric dresser HELENA BONHAM CARTER, nominated for her role as the Queen Mum, made the fashion statement of the night in a striking Vivienne Westwood frock and mismatched shoes.
She teamed a multicoloured, strapless, Vivienne Westwood dress with odd-coloured shoes, one green one red.
ANGELINA JOLIE looked stunning in a green Versace gown as she arrived with BRAD PITT.

Smoking Modern Family star SOFIA VERGARA arrived in eye-popping Vera Wang but fashion critics panned her shiny, highly flammable looking gown.
HEIDI KLUM miss-stepped too in a bold, psychadelic print that did little to flatter her supermodel figure.

SANDRA BULLOCK looked a bit goth with a severe dark fringe that seemed at odds with her ultra-feminine nude Jenny Packham gown.
Burlesque star CHRISTINA AGUILERA brought new boyfriend MATT RUTLER along as her brand new accessory - the pair met on the film's set and have been dating for two months.

House star OLIVIA WILDE was the first to arrive in a gold, stoned Marchesa dress teamed with glittering Louboutin shoes.
She said: "I'm so excited to be first. It's a beautiful day and Hollywood is so exciting right now."
And a breathtaking CATHERINE ZETA JONES proved she's back to her red carpet best in a mossy gathered marvel by Monique Lhuillier ball gown with Van Cleef & Arpels jewels.

Mad Men's JANUARY JONES, the face of Versace, stood out in one of the most vibrant - and revealing - dresses of the evening from the Italian fashion house.
HALLE BERRY chose simple but elegant black and JUSTIN BIEBER, who raised the biggest roar from the crowd waiting to see thier idols outside the hotel, looked grown-up in a sophisticated three-piece suit.
He added a dash of teen style with his white-soled sneakers.

KELLY OSBOURNE chose a black strapless gown with a pink flash - shame all the designer fabric in the world couldn't hide those distinctly non-red carpet tattoos.
Oscar winner GABOUREY SIDIBE shunned the boring blacks and nod-inducing nudes for a pretty, pink and purple print dress.

JAKE GYLLENHAAL, ALEC BALDWIN and ERIC STOLTZ were among the early arrivals.
And host RICKY GERVAIS, arriving with long-term partner JANE FALLON, promised he would be "going to go close to the edge but not over it."
Joking about drinking at the ceremony he said: ""Beer is not considered an alcoholic drink in England."
Nominee JENNIFER LOVE HEWITT, in a white strapless gown, arrived with boyfriend ALEX BEH.

Ricky Gervais, Jane Fallon and Jennifer Love Hewitt arrive at the 68th annual Golden Globe Awards in Beverly Hills, California, January 16, 2011.

Two stars whose style failed to wow were JULIA STILES and MICHELLE WILLIAMS.
Best Supporting Actress nominee Julia wore a heavy, black floor-length gown that would have suited an older woman better while Michelle looked frumpy rather than fabulous in this floral fright by Valentino.
